Textual Analysis of SS501- Fighter

When K-pop groups mainly the boy bands do a dark and hard concept for their music video they often wear dark clothing with chains attached to them and not alot of lighting creating a dark atmosphere. It is conventional to switch clips between the member singing and seeing the group performing their dance routines however in this music video SS501 break the conventions by having separate scene that link to their concept of the song.

The sound is in sync with the images as the members are lip syncing some of the lyrics and also performing the dance moves to the certain part of the music.for example when the line 2 i can fight you always in my mind" is sung there is a clip of SS501's leader Kim HyunJoong singing it.
In addition

the music video uses alot of contrasts between hard flashes and soft flashes. The effect of this is that it helps portrays the manly concept and helps show a differentiation between the clips.
The music video mainly uses continuity editing. You can see the scene changing however it flows freely not interrupting the audiences focus on the performance. This meets the audiences expectations.

The music video is a mixture of performance and co
ncept as it is stereotypical for the artist especially boy bands to perform their dance routine and sing during the video. However they have a concept linked to the songs title which is fighter so their video also shows various scene of them training and being strong to represent the songs title. The music video uses a array of camera shots such as close ups on the members faces so the audience can witness who is singing which part of the song but also to show their facial expressions which are quite fierce giving off a fighter feel. By using close ups they are gratifying the female target audience as they are often concerned with how the members look and that is one of their selling points.hey also use long shots to show the dance routine and when they are training whiles using medium shots of the members to show their solo parts.

The mise-en-scene of the music video helps contribute to the generic codes of the music video's concept. The background changes from a underground fighting cage to a dark empty room where the members are seen training hard with punching bags and skipping ropes linking with the theme of the song fighter. The members are also dressed in black clothing with silver chains attached onto the side of the trousers. They also have gold jackets to differentiate them from the back up dancers at times. In the scenes where the members are training there is dark lighting to add to the atmosphere ; also back lighting is used on the members solos to emphasis their power and strength. This attracts their target audience as it appeals to the female audience gratifying their needs which makes the song successful as females would then purchased it, especially their official fan club.
